About Perth Region NRM

Perth Region NRM is a community-led regional group with responsibility for coordinating and delivering natural resource management (NRM) in the Perth Region.

Formerly known as the Swan Catchment Council, the Board is a nineteen member group drawn from the community, State Government and Local Government.

As one of 56 groups from around Australia, the Council is helping to achieve a nation-wide approach to management and restoration of our environment.

Our Strategy, Vision and Mission Strategy

Strategy

High level longer term targets have been developed interactively by the Reference Groups to achieve goals and have been endorsed by the Board in the Strategic Overview in November 2010.

Under those longer term targets, a number of lower level targets will sit, with actions and projects tied together through the Reference Group Business Plans.

Vision

The natural resources of the Perth Region are protected and managed sustainably in their own right and for the enhancement of the quality of life for present and future generations.

We will work to implement our Vision by engaging a range of stakeholders in coordinated and Integrated Natural Resource Management.

How did it begin?

The Swan Avon Integrated Catchment Management (SAICM) coordinating group was established in 1994, following an Australian Government move towards regional NRM management.

The Swan Working Group, and the Avon Working Group were created to coordinate delivery of NRM across the Swan and Avon regions. The Swan Working Group was expanded and renamed to become the Swan Avon Catchment Council in 1998.

Perth Region NRM Inc., formerly known as the Swan Catchment Council Inc., was established
in 2002, following its separation from the Swan-Avon Catchment Council. It became one of 56
NRM Regions in Australia and one of six in WA established under the Natural Heritage Trust.
Following changes in federal government policies, and pending resolution of the Western
Australian Government's approach, Perth Region NRM has developed a flexible approach to
strategic planning using a business model set out in this strategic overview.
