Friends of Warwick Bushland (FWB)

Incorporating the Friends of Warwick Conservation Area (FWCA) and Friends of Warwick Senior High School Bushland (FWSHSB)

Friends of Warwick Bushland 1 Friends of Warwick Bushland 2 Friends of Warwick Bushland 3

Warwick Bushland covers 60 ha and is bounded by Erindale, Beach, Warwick, and Wanneroo Roads in the suburb of Warwick (City of Joondalup). It consists of the bushland areas of the Warwick Open Space Conservation Area and Warwick Senior High School.

The Friends of Warwick are people interested in learning about and caring for this special place. Membership is free and open to all ages. For administration purposes the two groups operate under the banner of the Friends of Warwick Bushland. This is because the Warwick Conservation Area is managed by the City of Joondalup as part of Warwick Open Space, and the high school bushland is managed through the school and Education Department. The Friends of Warwick SHS Bushland also began several years before the Friends of Warwick Conservation Area.

The government has identified the Warwick Conservation Area as one of regional significance and made it a Bush Forever Site (site 202). The school bushland is being considered for addition to the Bush Forever Site. Warwick Bushland is an excellent example of the flora and fauna that were once found throughout the area and is used by a wide range of community members and groups. The Friends, in conjunction with the City of Joondalup and Warwick Senior High School, aim to maintain and improve the condition of the Jarrah-Banksia woodland present for the enjoyment of current and future generations.

Projects of Interest

  • Regional Herbarium - with the assistance of our member botanists, the Friends Group have been compiling a substantial Regional Herbarium since 1999, which is nearing completion.
  • Graceful Sunmoth surveys - assisting Matt Williams and Nicole Willers, Department of Environment and Conservation, with an ongoing research project studying the Graceful Sun Moth, Synemon gratiosa, a declared rare species. Surveys are conducted in March.
  • Fungi Project - in cooperation with FungiMap Australia and the Perth Urban Bushland we have also been conducting fungi surveys since 1999, with a large number of new species recorded each year.
  • Vegetation monitoring - one of our main roles is to monitor the condition of the bushland, and, based on the assessment, develop and implement strategies to control threatening processes such as weed invasion, feral pests and fires .
  • "Land for Wildlife": both the High School bushland and Warwick Conservation Area have also been declared "Land for Wildlife" sites because of the presence of important habitat for a number of fauna species. One such species is the Speckled Stone Gecko, a delicate little Gecko, mainly found in the rocky Darling Ranges that depends on large fallen Jarrah logs for its survival in Warwick Bushland.
