ENVIRONMENTAL VALUES OF THE PERTH REGION

There are many environmental values in the Perth Region that are treasured by the community.
These include:

  • The Swan Canning Estuary and all of its tributaries and fringing vegetation.
  • Ecologically valuable lakes, wetlands and damp lands, including 3 RAMSAR and 18
    high category wetlands.
  • Vegetation associations that support endangered and threatened species through
national and regional parks and many reserves. Much of this vegetation occurs on
    private land.
  • Important surface and ground water resources that underpin ecological systems and
provide precious water supplies for urban areas and primary and secondary industries.
  • A coastal zone that is treasured by residents and visitors alike, but which is under
increasing pressure from development and rising sea levels.
  • Near-shore and offshore marine areas with valuable ecosystems and fish habitats.

To help manage and protect these values Targeted Environmental Programs at Perth Region NRM include the Marine program, the Natural Diversity program and the Integrated Water Program.

The Marine program goal is to conserve, maintain and enhance marine biodiversity, and improve marine water quality to ensure the ecological integrity of marine systems.

The Integrated Water program goal is to Improve the quality, ensure appropriate and environmentally sustainable use and minimise impacts to maintain water resources in all aquatic systems in the Region.

The Natural Diversity program goal is to conserve, maintain and enhance terrestrial biodiversity and natural habitat of all species in the Region and the functionality of the ecosystems which contain these species.

Targeted Response Programs at Perth Region NRM Inc. include Sustainable Industry and Sustainable Agriculture.

The Sustainable Agriculture program engages agricultural industries and farmers in implementing best management practice and promotes attitudinal, behavioural and institutional change to build a sustainable agricultural sector in the Region.

The Sustainable Industry Program engages industry in implementing best practice and promotes attitudinal, behavioural and institutional change to build a sustainable industrial sector in the Region.
