Indigenous Cultural Heritage Program

The Noongar people of the Perth Region have cared for this country for thousands of years. Their culture and heritage has much to offer in providing an understanding of natural resource management and their unique connection to country.

Perth Region NRM (PRNRM), as part of its aim, is to assist to ensure that Noongar people's traditional values, culture and heritage within the Swan Region is maintained and enhanced and recognises the connection of the Noongar people to the land. PRNRM achieves this through employment of Aboriginal staff, working with the local community and a close working relationship with the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council (SWALSC).

SWALSC is the native title representative body of the Noongar people who are the traditional owners of the South West of Australia. Part of its mandate is to advance and strengthen Noongar culture, language, heritage and society, including natural resource management.

The Noongar people have significant knowledge and skills relevant to the delivery of PRNRM projects. PRNRM ensures that through its program processes due consideration of Noongar culture and values is essential for project planning. Our obligations with both the State and Commonwealth Government also state we consider local Aboriginal culture and values as well.

Through SWALSC's Metro Working Group the Aboriginal NRM Program reports on PRNRM activities who in turn provide advice and direction on projects and also provide a forum for further involvement with projects.  The Metro Working Group also provides comment on the development of the future direction of the program.
