Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management Plan Template (ACHMPT)

ACHMPT was  designed for Local Governments to provide a step by step process for the protection of Noongar culture and heritage.  The template is a step by step, easy to undersatand guide to assist with engaging Noongar people and incoporating their traditional knowledge as part of the planning, implementation and operation processes of local government.

The ACHMP offers Local Governments the opportunity to incorporate better practice principles that protect, enhance and manage Aboriginal sites, culture and heritage.  The ACHMPT can assist with identifying significant Aboriginal Heritage sites and offers guidance on the consultation processes with the Aboriginal community. This can include assistance with developing strategic management planning targets to incorporate and manage Aboriginal cultural heritage and provide advice and guidance on Aboriginal cultural heritage and management.

Protecting Aboriginal cultural heritage can provide a number of sustainable outcomes for project management.  Some of the benefits can include:

  • Development of meaningful partnerships and community engagement with your local Aboriginal community.
  • Greater understanding of your local Aboriginal community and awareness of Aboriginal cultural heritage.
  • Collaborative agreement with the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council.
  • Empowers the Aboriginal Community.
  • Provides an opportunity for employment of Aboriginal people.
  • Adds value to the project and Local Government Area.
  • Improve the environment.

Noongar Coastal Trails

The Noongar Coastal Trails project invites the community to explore the Perth coast and discover the stories of the Noongar people. The Noongar Coastal Trail was developed to highlight and educate the broader community on Noongar life and culture along the Perth metropolitan coastline.  10 Noongar sites have been identified and interpreted to share Noongar knowledge with the broader community.  The trail starts at Mandurah and finishes at Two Rocks, each site tells a local Aboriginal story and shares the knowledge of the Noongar connection with the coastline.  Brochures and posters have been developed to assist the community in travelling the trail by providing the UBD map coordinates.  The Noongar Coastal Trail is supported by Coastwest and the Australia Government. Further funding will be sought to extend the trail and develop signage.

Swan and Canning Iconic River Trails Project

The South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council (SWALSC) in partnership with Perth Region NRM were successful in securing funding through Lotterywest to complete an 18 month consultation project with the Noongar community to highlight the values of the Swan River (Derbarl Yerridan) and Canning River (Djarlgarro Beelier). This project was an avenue for the Noongar community to share their cultural connections and stories about the Rivers and voice their concerns about the rivers.  The overall outcomes of the project was to include Noongar values into the broader Swan and Canning River Trails that are being developed to provide interpretive trails around the rivers highlighting the Rivers European, Noongar and Natural Environmental values through the Swan River Trust.  Stage one of this project consulted with the Noongar community to identify the Noongar values for the interpretive trails network.  This project built strong relationships with the Noongar community and stakeholders with a vested interest in the interpretation of the Swan and Canning Rivers.  The value of this project is particularly important to the Noongar community as it provides the Noongar community with an opportunity to ensure their recognition and acknowledged affiliation with the Rivers by the broader community. Importantly it provides an opportunity for the Noongar community to share their knowledge, stories and cultural heritage with the broader community and its significance to the Noongar people.

Aboriginal Cultural Heritage in the Tributaries region

This project is funded under The Australian Governments Caring for our Country program.  This project aims to identify the Aboriginal traditional knowledge and significance of the Perth's Tributaries including:

  • Canning River
  • Helena River
  • Susannah Brook
  • Wooroloo Brook
  • Jane Brook
  • Ellen Brook

This project is to ensure Aboriginal heritage information is included and collated for NRM and 'friends of' groups and ensure consultation with the Aboriginal people who have a direct links and interest in the tributary areas.  The project promotes joint management of NRM within the tributaries and an opportunity to highlight and promote Aboriginal cultural heritage.

Community Engagement

The Perth Region NRM Aboriginal Trails Coordinator and Aboriginal Program Manager endeavour to engage with the community as often as possible. This includes visiting schools, attending workshops and conferences and speaking with local elders on a regular basis.

On a recent visit to Hillcrest Primary School in Bayswater, Barry McGuire, Aboriginal Trails Coordinator shared both stories and songs with the Pre-Primary students. They presented him with a lovely thankyou card.
