The Environmental Weed Strategy of Western Australia (1999) provided a basic ranking of weeds on a state wide basis. However, with 900 weed taxa in the Swan region, it was recognized that a regional assessment was necessary in order to prioritize works programs and effectively allocate resources. It was also recognized that to effectively manage the devastating impacts of weeds, a co-ordinated and cross tenure strategic approach would be needed.
NHT funding subsequently provided funds for a Swan
Weed Project, with the focus being on species impacting high value
biodiversity assets, particularly regionally significant or high
conservation areas of bushland. The project was delivered by the
Department of Environment and Conservation and now:
• Environmental weeds impacting on biodiversity in the Swan Region
NRM have been assessed and prioritized.
• Strategic management plans for 6 key species type have been
developed.
• A framework for developing an environmental weed database
has been established.
Strategic plans for five of the key weed species of the Swan Region are accessible through the links below, and provide models for management of other species.
Euphorbia terracina (Geraldton carnation weed)
Lachenalia reflexa (Yellow soldier)
Retama raetam (White weeping broom)
Tribolium uniolae (Hass grass)
