1. Risk Assessments in Light
Industrial SMEs
2. Guidelines
for Industrial Development
Industry Inspectors from Perth Region NRM are currently working with the Swan River Trust and the Cities of Canning, Belmont, Gosnells and Swan on a project to improve the quality of Perth's stormwater. Assessments of light and heavy industrial premises are being conducted in these Cities to monitor compliance with provisions of the Environmental Protect Act 1986 and other associated environmental legislation.
These visits raise awareness amongst business operators of their requirements with regards to how their business may impact with the environment. This includes an assessment of how materials are stored on site, liquid and solid waste management practices and the availability of emergency equipment such as spill kits and MSDSs.
PRNRM officers do not prosecute operators acting in breach of the legislation but rather provide information, support and assistance so that issues can be resolved without the need for legal action which may be initiated by local governments or the Department of Environment Protection. Businesses found to be breaching elements of the Act or subsidiary legislation and provided with information on what needs to be done for compliance and re-assessed at a later date. Local stormwater systems in these industrial estates drain towards sensitive wetlands and compensation basins that discharge into the Swan and Canning River systems and a reduction in pollutants such as hydrocarbons, heavy metals and detergents is expected as a result of this project which runs until mid 2011.

The Guidelines for Industrial Development were launched in May 2010 by the Honourable John Day MLA, Minister for Planning, Culture and the Arts.
In collaboration with State and Local Governments, the 'Guidelines for Industrial Development' have been designed to facilitate the development of new industrial estates that are more economically, environmentally and socially responsive, whilst being more resilient and adaptable now and into the future.
They are purpose designed to assist town planners, engineers, environmental scientists, architects, urban designers and land developers, along with Local and State Governments.
The document is structured to provide a practical step-by-step approach for the implementation of sustainability principles into the planning, design and construction phases of new industrial estates, as well as ongoing business operations. It is adaptable to fit Western Australia's planning framework and will complement the State Government's Industrial Land Strategy (Nov.2009).
