A number of research studies highlighting sustainability issues facing SMEs have been completed for PRNRM. These reports include research on mobile SMEs, SME supply chain responsibilities, incentives for SMEs and opportunities for green procurement. They have identified the extent of various sustainable and environmental impacts associated with a range of SME sectors and activities, and have provided recommendations for further actions in reducing these impacts.
These projects have been carried out in collaboration with SMERC at ECU, DoW, Local Governments, WALGA, Swinburne University Victoria, DEC and Australian Government (CfoC). Click on the links to download a copy of these studies.

A Snapshot of Contaminants in the Drains of Perth's Industrial Areas
Surface water and sediment were sampled in a snapshot study at six sites in four industrial drains in the Perth area for a range of contaminants. All four drains, namely Herdsman Lake, Bayswater, Bibra Lake and Bickley Brook were contaminated to some degree by compounds from various industrial activities and other anthropogenic sources which raised concerns about the impact on water quality for the natural water courses receiving this run-off.
Contaminants that were detected and pose a potential risk to the downstream environment include:
• hormones, in particular the synthetic hormone
ethinylestradiol;
• polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs);
• metals, including aluminium, arsenic, lead, chromium,
copper, nickel and zinc;
• polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and total petroleum
hydrocarbons (TPHs);
• surfactants, both anionic and nonionic forms;
• phenolic compounds, in particular phenol and creosol;
and
• nutrients: primarily total oxidised nitrogen, organic
nitrogen, and particulate phosphorus
